A Look at the Croatian Market

The world of livestock and meat in which VAEX operates is dynamic. In a series of articles, three different key figures active in the Croatian meat production chain share their vision. What developments, opportunities, and threats do they see in their field? The focus is on preventive and curative animal health, transport, and slaughterhouses within the Croatian market.

Domagoj Soski

Position: Veterinarian
Company: Sedlic Veterinary Practice
Location: Bjelovar, Croatia

Increase in international transport raises risk of exposure to diseases

Sedlic Veterinary Practice is a clinic for both farm and companion animals, from small to large. We oversee several farms to which we provide veterinary services. Our main focus is on the health and welfare of animals. We support farmers with nutritional issues and the everyday challenges that arise with animals on the farms.

As veterinarians, we realize that our role goes beyond just treating individual animals. We work closely with farmers to address nutritional problems and provide support for overall animal health. By offering expert advice, conducting routine checks, and implementing preventive measures, we contribute to animal welfare.

Domestic livestock production in Croatia faces challenges. Increasingly, the import of good genetics is chosen to address these issues. This results in a rise in international transport. While this benefits trade, it also brings a higher risk of exposure to new diseases. To mitigate these risks, it is essential that farmers and veterinarians work closely together. By applying proper health protocols and sharing knowledge, they can reduce damage and safeguard animal health.

Nevertheless, the favorable climate and good weather conditions still offer some farms the opportunity to produce high-quality feed at low cost and remain competitive. These farms play a crucial role in maintaining domestic livestock production and ensuring the country’s food security.

The future of veterinary practices is uncertain. Some livestock farms will close, and some will shift their focus more towards agriculture. Young veterinarians are also increasingly inclined to seek employment with pharmaceutical companies or animal feed producers rather than in veterinary practices.

It is crucial to recognize the role of veterinarians as valuable advisors and partners in promoting animal health, ensuring food safety, and maintaining a sustainable livestock sector. Together, we can face challenges, find innovative solutions, and create a resilient future for both animals and farmers.

Ivan Tubic

Position: Manager & Owner
Company: Agro Tubic
Location: Vrbovec, Croatia

Adapting to developments in animal transport by investing in transport equipment

Agro Tubic was founded in 2009, at the time together with my father Franjo Tubic and brother Zdravko Tubic. Since 2022, I, Ivan Tubic, have been the sole director of the company. Agro Tubic specializes in the transport of live livestock and is based in Croatia. However, we operate throughout Europe. In addition, we are also involved in the purchase and sale of livestock, both import and export. Our business partners are mainly located in Southeast Europe, but also in the Netherlands, where we collaborate with VAEX.

Like many other companies, Agro Tubic has faced the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic and inflation. The livestock trade sector has been heavily impacted by the pandemic. Rising raw material prices have led to higher feed costs and increased expenses for organizations within our sector. But as long as demand remains high, we remain optimistic about the future.

There are also opportunities for growth and development ahead. Currently, seven of our trucks are on the road for animal transport. In the future, we aim to expand this to ten trucks. This further expansion of our transport activities will not only create more jobs, but also provide opportunities to optimize our services. Additionally, we strive to expand our trading activities to enter new markets and achieve growth for Agro Tubic.

Given the developments in animal transport and the regulatory changes currently underway, it is necessary to continue investing in ongoing improvement. We do this by optimizing processes, investing in new transport equipment, and minimizing the potential for errors during journeys. This is a top priority for us.

With a focus on improvement, investments in modern transport equipment, and strong partnerships with companies like VAEX, Agro Tubic looks to the future with confidence.

Darko Bokan

Position: Board Member & Head of Purchasing
Company: Petason d.o.o.
Location: Vranjic, Croatia

In Croatia, meat remains an important part of the food industry and every dining table

With over 30 years of experience, Petason d.o.o. has experienced impressive growth and has become one of the largest players in the meat industry in Croatia. At the beginning, our focus was mainly on trading live animals. However, as the market developed and demand grew, we took a significant step forward a few years later by starting our own meat processing factory. Since then, we have continuously invested in new technologies and talented employees.

The future of the meat sector looks very promising, especially in traditional markets like Croatia. Meat remains a key part of the food industry and every dining table. As part of the meat industry, we have the opportunity to contribute to the development of self-sufficiency in Croatia’s meat sector. This is a long-term process. At the moment, Croatia is only self-sufficient when it comes to beef; for everything else, the country relies on imports. In this area, Croatia has the opportunity to develop and become more competitive at the European level. With the right investments and commitment, we hope to contribute to this.

As a company based on the Adriatic coast, we benefit from the growth of tourism in Croatia. This is especially important for the food industry and gives us a unique position to offer our products to a growing market.

Opportunities are all around us, but we must seize them in time. Petason d.o.o. embraces new trends and directions, with a particular focus on animal welfare. We believe this is crucial for creating good and safe supply chains and traceability systems, and for preventing problems that may arise along the way. Since Croatia joined the European Union, a world of opportunities has opened up for Croatian producers. This has been a major step in the globalization process of our meat industry.

Of course, there are also challenges. Since joining the European Union, Croatia has faced a significant outflow of labor. Finding qualified personnel is currently one of our biggest challenges, just as it is in the rest of the Western world. Nevertheless, we continue to invest in our employees, because we believe they are essential to the success of our company.

The world of livestock and meat in Croatia is on the move

Did you know that VAEX is very active in the Croatian market and in former Yugoslav countries? For VAEX, these countries are important for the sale of, among other things, piglets, slaughtered piglets, and blue crossbred heifers. But these countries also serve as a suitable purchasing channel for VAEX when it comes to slaughter pigs. In this region, VAEX works together with transporter Agro Tubic to ensure everything runs smoothly in terms of transport.

In short, the Croatian market is bustling and VAEX is present. Our sales representative in this region is Mike Cornelissen.
